Wie geht es weiter?

On February 20, 2007, Variety Magazine revealed that Marc Cherry and the ABC Studios had signed “an eight-figure overall pact”, ensuring Cherry’s commitment to the show until May 2011, the end of the series’ projected seventh season. In addition, the studio has negotiated deals with “all key members of the cast” to stay on the show until then. While Cherry said that he would like the show to come to an end at that point, ABC Studio’s Mark Pedowitz stated that “We'll cross that bridge when we come to it”. The series was renewed for a fifth season on February 12, 2008.

Being a big fan of Broadway musicals himself, and following the success of musical episodes on television series such as Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Cherry has expressed an interest in writing a musical episode of Desperate Housewives.

As shown in the second half of the two-hour season four finale, season five will take place five years into the future. Due to the time jump, several actors won't be returning to the show. The child actors will not be back (i.e. the Scavo children), and the teen actors, Joy Lauren (Danielle), Lyndsy Fonseca (Dylan) and Andrea Bowen (Julie), will also not be returning to Wisteria Lane. Shawn Pyfrom (Andrew), however, will be staying on the show, and as shown in the time jump, Andrew is now Bree's assistant. The fate of Mike Delfino is still up in the air. James Denton, who plays Mike, won't receive official word on his fate until mid-June.

Uncertainty of his position on the show started after the end of the season four finale, set five years into the future, where Susan arrives home from a poker night and kisses another man (played by Queer as Folk's Gale Harold).
